5-String Minstrel Banjo

TOOLS:
1/4" drill bit
1/16" drill bit
saw
coarse rasp (or saw rasp)
phillips screwdriver
fishing line (50lb 80lb 100lb)
1 A string from a classical guitar
fingernail clippers
5 tuning machines (I like economy tuners from cbgitty, set of 6 is $15 OR rob them off a broken guitar)
2 screws for each tuner
3 1.5" screws
2 eye hooks SAME THICKNESS AS THE 3 SCREWS (somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/8")
whatever drill bit it takes to fit the screws and the eye hooks
a nail (or a fret and fret saw, if you're all fancy)
hacksaw
big pliers

find a drum
cut it in half
decide scale length (somewhere between 24" and 27")
get 1" x 1.5" wood
length of thru neck = width of drum + 8" (1" for the tail piece, 5" for the heel and 2" for the drone block)
length of neck = scale length + 4" for the headstock - 2/3 of the drums width
cut drone block off the end of the thru neck (leaving the convenient slanty side on both pieces)
chop off excess from drone block
cut headstock 3.75" long and 1/4" deep
cut scoop 3.75" long and 1/4" deep (you don't have to do this if you're gluing the neck together, only if you're bolting it)
cut tailpiece slots
drill 5 holes for the tuners (1/4")
-two holes 1" from the end, and 11mm in from the sides. these strings wrap around the inside
-the two other holes are 2.25" from the end, and 9mm in from the sides. these strings wrap around the outside
drill 2 holes for the neck bolts (1/4")
drill 2 small holes for each tuner (1/16")
drill 2 string tree holes and 2 drone block holes
cut some sort of fret slot 1/4" from the edge of the headstock (file a groove and lay your nail in there, or install an actual fret
shape heel
position the drone block on the neck so the hole is 1/4 of the way from the nut to the bridge and trace it
shape neck (don't shave away the line we just traced)
taper the right side of the neck 1/8" in
sand everything and flatten fretboard with a sanding block
BURN IT (if you want)
oil it
-wait 24hrs- (or dont)
cut two square holes in drum 3/4" from the head of the drum
with a hacksaw, cut two sections out of the rim for the strings to pass through. (cut 4 or 5 sections then rip each bit out with pliers)
assemble everything.
oh and make a bridge (between 3/16" 1/2" in height) (could be a pencil or a ruler or whittle it from a stick from outside)
strings go [drone-> g=50lb, d=guitar A string, g=100lb, b=80lb, d=50lb]
a bowline knot looped around something and through itself is as good as any knot for attaching strings. dont do the loopty uke thing imo
